Hi, I have been battling with this problem for some time. I have a large document, which includes hundreds of small lettered lists of items, spread across the document. All of them need to start at a) and need to use the same text style as Normal style. What I did so far was to create a test document with the outline as follows: a) Test b) Test c) Test Text d) Text e) Text f) Text Text g) Text h) Text i) Text Text As you can probably see, every time I start a new list, it continues numbering from a previous list. Going every time and restarting numbering becomes annoying after list number 20. Is there any way to change the default behaviour of Word 2010 to restart the numbering every time a new list starts?
Preview of style definition can be found at: Any suggestions on how to solve that would be welcome. Otherwise, I will spend the next 6 months clicking away through lists. Thank you in advance Marek.
In your document, go to the first Heading 1 entry, select the numbering drop down on the Home bar and choose 'Set Numbering Value'. Now right-click on the Heading 1 style quick selector and chose the first option that should say 'Update Heading 1 to Match Selection'. Start page numbering later in your document. Note: If you're editing a document in a web browser using Word Online, you can't start numbering later in the document. If you have the desktop version of Word, you can make changes to your document in the desktop app by clicking Open in Word.
Sometimes, no matter what you do, you just can’t get a numbered list in Word to restart numbering at 1. Here’s a trick that works sometimes (I don’t guarantee this trick will work every time, but it’s a quick and easy thing to try):. Put your cursor at the beginning of the first item in the list.
Press Enter. The first item now moves down one to the second position and the first position becomes a blank line. Put your cursor at the beginning of the second item (was the first), and right-click. Select Restart Numbering.
Your second item should now be number 1. Delete the blank line above it.
